Newcastle is proud to host the second UK Maker Fair, a festival for all those love to put to good use the things that you everyday folk leave behind.

As their website puts it:

"Maker Faire is a two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. It's for creative, resourceful people of all ages and backgrounds who like to tinker and love to make things.

This interactive event features cool robots, clever gadgets, garden shed inventions, knitted wonders, the occasional fireball, and much more! With loads of great shows and demonstrations at Centre for Life and Discovery Museum, there's something for absolutely everyone!"

There's no real other way to describe the Maker Fair.  It is to Steampunk what bangers are to mash.  What brass is to goggles.  What similes are to trying to get your point across.

Still not convinced?  Look at the list of events they have planned.  As a small taste:

• The secret of print Gocco, how fabric scraps and thread can turn into works of art, original t-shirts and bags
• A miniature working steam locomotive: the assembled frames, wheels and valve gear components of a miniature 5" gauge steam locomotive.
• Superpants will demonstrate the “foam machine” as well as showing a huge amount of projects including furniture built from aircraft parts; giant 'Kerplunk' and a giant ball maze (for kids to play with); 'Family Fortunes' quiz buzzers; a roving mobile electric barstool and much more.
• An autonomous outdoor sound object able to read from various sensors such as humidity and light which will generate and play back various sounds. It is able to play to the sunrise in an outdoor location, in the tradition (but not the style!) of a classic Indian morning raga.

Not only that, but Ghostfire--the official sound of Steampunk--will be playing there.
